SWOL's mission is rooted in my deep personal connection to underserved youth. I was raised in an impoverished neighborhood by an alcoholic and drug-addicted father. For most of my childhood, I felt trapped and uncertain how to build a different future for myself.
My high school counselor, Sister Jo, and my guardian ad litem intervened at a critical moment, walking alongside me through landmines and helping me access higher education. I was fortunate to receive first-gen scholarships, complete my undergrad degree, and go on to attend the University of Michigan Law School.
While beginning my legal career at national law firms, I dedicated nearly all of my spare time to working with marginalized children. After years of hearing stories about the lack of resources for undocumented students and families here at the border, I finally made the leap to launch a service devoted just to them.
In 2012, I founded Students Without Limits to ensure that those most vulnerable have access to the support, guidance and tools they need to pursue higher education and escape the cycle of poverty.
